UL Listing / UL Certification

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is the primary safety certification body for electrical products sold in the United States and Canada. UL listing indicates that the product has been tested and meets applicable UL standards. It is recognized by authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) across North America.

Why it matters for robotics sourcing

For robotics products deployed in industrial settings in the US or Canada, UL listing or an equivalent NRTL certification (ETL, CSA) is typically required by insurance policies and facility codes. Without it, the product may be rejected by the AHJ during facility inspection or may void the facility's insurance coverage.

What to verify from the supplier

  1. 1Search the UL Product iQ database (iq.ul.com) to verify the listing is current and applies to the specific model
  2. 2Confirm the UL standard referenced is appropriate (e.g., UL 1740 for industrial robots, UL 3100 for AMRs)
  3. 3For robots with integrated software or PLCs, verify both the hardware and control system are covered
  4. 4Check whether the listing covers the full assembly or only a subcomponent (e.g., the motor but not the entire arm)
  5. 5NRTL alternatives (ETL by Intertek, CSA) are acceptable in most jurisdictions — verify AHJ requirements

Common gaps in supplier certification documentation

  • UL mark on marketing materials is decorative or refers to a component, not the complete product
  • Listing expired or withdrawn but still shown on product literature
  • UL standard does not cover the intended application (e.g., outdoor deployment, cleanroom, ATEX zones)
  • Canadian market requires CSA or cUL marking — a standard US UL listing alone is insufficient
  • Customized configurations require separate review not covered by the standard listing
