FCC Part 15 Authorization

FCC Part 15 authorization is required in the United States for any device that emits radio frequency energy — including robots with WiFi, Bluetooth, UWB, or other wireless communication. Without FCC authorization, the device cannot be legally marketed or imported into the US.

Why it matters for robotics sourcing

Most modern AMRs, collaborative robots, and mobile platforms include wireless connectivity for fleet management, remote monitoring, or sensor fusion. Any such device entering the US market requires FCC authorization. This applies to the final product as configured, not just to the wireless module in isolation.

What to verify from the supplier

  1. 1Request the FCC ID and verify it in the FCC Equipment Authorization Database (fccid.io or FCC search)
  2. 2Confirm the FCC ID covers the complete product as configured — not only the wireless module
  3. 3For products using a certified module, confirm the host integration complies with the module's integration instructions
  4. 4Check grant date and verify the authorized frequency bands match the product's actual operating bands
  5. 5For products sold in Canada, a corresponding ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development) authorization is also required

Common gaps in supplier certification documentation

  • Only the wireless module is FCC-authorized; the complete product as a system is not
  • Host product integration does not follow the certified module's integration guidelines
  • FCC ID is printed on product but does not match the FCC database record
  • Authorization covers an older hardware revision; the shipped product has an updated radio configuration
  • Canadian market requires ISED authorization in addition to FCC — not automatically equivalent
