CE Marking (Conformité Européenne)

CE marking is mandatory for most robot hardware sold commercially in the European Economic Area. It indicates that the product meets EU safety, health, and environmental requirements as defined by applicable directives — typically the Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive for industrial robots.

Why it matters for robotics sourcing

Any robotics product sold commercially in the EU must carry a CE mark. This includes collaborative robots, AMRs, AGVs, robotic arms, and robot controllers. Distributors and system integrators who sell CE-unmarked equipment in the EU face legal liability.

What to verify from the supplier

  1. 1Request the full Declaration of Conformity (DoC), not just a CE logo on a brochure
  2. 2Confirm which EU directives the DoC covers — Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is the primary one for robots
  3. 3Check the DoC covers the specific model and configuration being sourced (not a different variant)
  4. 4For collaborative robots, verify EN ISO 10218-1 and ISO/TS 15066 compliance is addressed
  5. 5Confirm the technical file is held by an EU-based responsible person or the manufacturer

Common gaps in supplier certification documentation

  • CE mark applies to a different product variant or configuration
  • DoC references outdated directive versions
  • No EN ISO 10218-1 or ISO/TS 15066 reference for collaborative robots
  • CE mark is self-declared with no third-party assessment for higher-risk categories
  • Accessories or end-effectors are CE-marked separately but the integrated system is not
